Honourable Mary Polak,
The recent application from Greyhound Canada to discontinue certain rural routes is concerning and the reason we are writing to you. We understand that should the application not be granted that Greyhound is prepared to withdraw all service from BC.
Northern BC has very limited access to transportation in many rural communities as it is and further small communities throughout BC already have no Greyhound service.
These are exactly the types of moves that continue to contribute to making life more difficult for those who are poor and disproportionately will impact women, seniors, First Nations and people with disabilities.
Particularly in northern BC women have gone missing and or have been murdered, many of whom were last seen hitch-hiking. Eliminating access to transportation in these communities and along the Highway of Tears is unacceptable.
If granted, Greyhound Canada will be permitted to abdicate any responsibility they have to contributing to the wellness and safety of our communities. Workers have contributed to the success and profits of greyhound Canada over the years and deserve better. Communities deserve better as well. Potentially impacted communities have not been consulted and alternatives to safe affordable transportation have been found.
We are asking that you reject Greyhound's application to discontinue service in any community and work with the stakeholders to find alternatives, which do not include driving wages or benefits down for workers.
