Letter to Joy MacPhail

The North Okanagan Labour Council sent the following letter to interim provincial NDP leader Joy MacPhail on the news she would not be seeking the party leadership

June 11, 2003

Dear Joy:

The members of the North Okanagan Labour Council would like to express our thanks to you for your many years of service to working people and families in British Columbia.

While your announcement that you will not seek the NDP leadership in November and will leave public life after the next election is disappointing, we are heartened to hear you will be staying on as the MLA for Vancouver-Hastings until the next election.

Joy, since the last election, you have been the best MLA our region has had. You have stood up for Interior residents on a number of issues when our own MLAs would not.

Your fight against Coquihalla privatization is particularly appreciated in this area and we hope will ultimately be successful.

Good luck in the future. You will be missed.

(Note: The Liberal government eventually did back down from its Coquihalla privatization scheme. MacPhail sent a letter to the NOLC congratulating those who fought privatization on their success, but she certainly deserves credit as well.)
