Cheryl Stone, UFCW 1518
Employees are discontented in most of the UFCW stores, there are almost no Clerk 2 staff being
scheduled at the downtown Kelowna Safeway Store and with another raise coming up more hours will be
cut once again. Some of the Save On Stores in the Okanagan have been reducing full time employees
to part time and it looks like in the North Okanagan - Vernon, Salmon Arm Safeway stores, it could
be happening there soon. On the lighter side, on January 3, UFCW 1518 members from Shoppers Drug
Mart 279 in New Westminster voted 95% in favor of accepting terms for a new contract. The agreement
had been recommended for acceptance by the Union Negotiating Committee, and is for a three-year
contract. The new agreement includes retroactive wage increases for 2011, and further increases in
the remaining two years of the Collective Agreement.
Elizabeth Woods, BCFORUM / EI Board of Referees
December 22, 2011 - The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development,
today announced the appointment of Ms. Mary-Lou Donnelly to the Canada Employment Insurance
Commission as the Commissioner for Workers for a five-year term, effective January 16, 2012. "Ms.
Donnelly has earned a strong reputation in negotiating and leading labour discussions and has made
significant contributions to the organizations she has served, particularly in Nova Scotia,Ó said
Minister Finley. "I am very pleased to appoint Ms. Donnelly as the next Commissioner for Workers of
the Canada Employment Insurance Commission and am confident that Canadians will benefit from her
skills and experience."
Wendy Mah, BCGEU
BCNU filed a number of applications with the BC Labour Relations Board (LRB) in late November to
raid LPNs from BCGEU and other unions. They did not submit a province-wide application and have
left out many LPN worksites across the province. BCNU is not interested in a province-wide strategy
and is instead trying to capture LPNs in specific health authorities. BCGEU remains confident that
LPNs with our union are choosing to stay with the BCGEU and maintain their independent voice In the
coming year, about 85 per cent of BCGEU union members will be re-negotiating collective agreements
with the province and the broader public sector employers. The Union has served notice to the
Liberal government that our members are not willing to settle for any more zeros.
