Karen Abramsen, UFCW 1518 -- EI Board of Referees Report
The new Social Security Tribunal will see the 700 existing part time referees, who sit as members of three person boards, reduced to 39 members. The current 3 person boards spend 18,200 days per year determining if EI decisions are fair. The new one person board will collectively spend 9,000 days annually. The Harper government says that they are creating this new system because they have not met their standard of having appeals heard within 30 days, as per the EI Act. How can anyone think that reducing the board days by half will speed up the process? As it is now, appellants have only 45 minutes to present their case. The new system will be more formal and will require more technical legal arguments, forcing appellants to hire lawyers. This new flawed system is expected to be in place by April 2013.

STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Events Committee -- Labour Day or May Days event 2013 -- A survey letter will be sent to all of our affiliate Presidents in the New Year, to determine whether or not the NOLC should organize one of these two events.
