REPORTS OF LOCAL UNIONS/STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS/CLC REPORT:
(A) REPORTS OF LOCAL UNIONS:

Nancy Ingersol -- VTA Report re the CLC/BCFED Winter School
Thank you to the North Okanagan Labour Council and the VTA for sponsoring my week at this school. It was a very busy week with classes all day and events most evenings. At least I didn't have to cook! The course, called 'Unions in the Community' was very informative with a small but enthusiastic group of participants. We learned of the role of 'union counselors'; members who are trained through this course to assist other members with any issues [mainly personal] confronting them. It is the counselor's role to be a listener and help the member to access any services that are available in the community or nearby. We learned about various agencies and provincial services and reviewed listening skills and confidentiality guidelines. We worked together on projects that would involve our unions in the community-seniors' housing, homelessness, drug rehabilitation and helping non-union members become aware of their rights. The CLC promotes unions working together with their communities and has a formal relationship with the United Way. We had presentations from the lower mainland UW around their programs for kids and seniors and discussed skills for building capacity in our own unions and skills for developing relationships with community members and agencies. This is a brief report of activities but I would certainly be open to any questions through my e-mail. Thanks again.

Bill Zemen -- CUPE 3523 -- Their local concern is on how the employer is remitting M.P.P. Also it would be nice to see the NOLC link on their website.

Karen Abramsen, EI Board of Referees: Here is some information on an obscure EI regulation regarding Special Benefits (sick leave). If an employer pays just one day of the sick leave, then the 2 week waiting period for EI benefits is waived.

(B) STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Day of Mourning Karen Abramsen reported that the DoM is going ahead on Friday, April 27th noon at Ben Lee Park in conjunction with Worksafe BC. The NOLC commemorative bench will be in place. We will unveil the bench. Please plan on attending as we have 3 speakers.

Protein for People -- Cheryl Stone The big event is happening on Sunday May 6th. We have a magician/clown/musician and many craft vendors as well as information booth displays. There will be enough food for about 450 people, along with pop, juice and water. I still need volunteers to help the day of, so if you are not busy come on down, have free lunch and some fun, bring the family as this is a family event. Call Cheryl at 250 575 5301 if you are willing to sign up for a position or email at nolc.cstone@gmail.com

Labour Day 2012 -- Carole Gordon -- The NOLC is not holding a LD event in Kelowna this year; we will do something to honour Labour Day at the September 5, 2012 NOLC meeting.

United Way 2012 -- Carole Gordon reported on the roles on the UW. The Labour Council has 2 positions as labour directors -- 2 in north, one in the south Okanagan -- at the last UW meeting Carole discussed the continuance of all 3 positions. We need one person to fill the vacancy with Debra Critchley's term ending soon. Anyone interested please let Carole Gordon know. caroledawn@telus.net
